American Web, the Denver printer successfully supplying Daniel Brogan’s decision to print 5280 on 30% recycled paper, has officially earned Forest Stewardship Council Certification this April.
“We’re elated and have worked very hard to achieve this important certification,” stated Clarke Fine of American Web.
FSC paper comes from sustainable forests that conserve soil, air and water quality, wildlife and fish habitat and aesthetics, and is harvested without social conflicts and the unlawful use of indigenous peoples’ lands—and is only awarded to printers who follow strict environmental protocols.
The Forest Stewardship Council independently tracks, traces and identifies wood fibers from the forest through every step of the procurement, manufacturing and printing process. Moreover, an FSC certified printer must prove, through 3rd party audits, that their printing facility follows rigid guidelines for renewable energy practices. That printer must prove the reduction of VOCs, the collection of pre-consumer waste and must walk with as a limited carbon footprint as possible.
“The transition to FSC is valuable for designers who care about how printing practices impact the environment. FSC certification and E-green certifications are putting the right pressure on companies to do things differently,” says AIGA Colorado Sustainability Co-Director, Susan M. Snipes.
